FM-III to go 3G way on auction

The 40-odd private radio broadcasters will have to participate in e-auctions in order to secure any additional FM stations under the proposed FM-III policy. Also, there will be a staggered three-year auctioning of 806 FM stations between 2011-2013. In the first-phase, around 160 FM stations across 60 towns are expected to be auctioned starting in March-end, early April, sources said.


Under the FM-III policy framework, 806 FM radio frequencies across 283 towns will be auctioned. But the highlight of FM-III policy is that of the 283 towns, at least 217 towns will get access to private FM radio for the first time.


This comes after a group of ministers (GoM) on FM-III gave its nod to the e-auctions compared to sealed tender-based traditional auctions on Wednesday evening saying e-auction process are absolutely transparent. The decision of the GoM will have to be ratified by the Cabinet which could happen...
